Minneapolis runners will gather at Lake Harriet on July 18 for the annual Harriet 5K, one of several fun runs and charity walks scheduled through August.
These events align with peak summer weather that keeps temperatures in the 70s and 80s most afternoons, giving residents reliable windows for outdoor group exercise before fall sets in. The Minneapolis Parks and Recreation Board has expanded its calendar this year to include more low-cost options after seeing steady demand for organized activities in city green spaces.
Participants can register for a July 25 charity walk along the Mississippi River Parkway starting near the Stone Arch Bridge in the North Loop. The Minneapolis Running Club is also hosting a 10K loop through Powderhorn Park on August 8 that benefits local youth programs. Both routes stay on paved paths maintained by the parks department and avoid major road crossings.
Last year similar events drew 1,800 total participants across four dates, with entry fees set at $25 for adults and $15 for students. Registration opens online through the parks board site two weeks before each start time, and organizers cap group sizes at 500 to manage parking at nearby lots on 42nd Street and 48th Street.
Anyone interested should visit the Minneapolis Parks and Recreation Board website or stop by the Lake Harriet Bandshell information table between 9 a.m. and noon on weekdays to sign up and pick up route maps. Checking weather updates the morning of each event helps runners choose appropriate gear for the lakeside or riverfront terrain.
